Do I need an asbestos survey before demolishing a house?

In most cases, yes. Federal asbestos rules require an inspection before demolition of most buildings, and Florida building departments commonly ask for the survey with the demolition permit. Older homes can contain asbestos in flooring, popcorn ceilings, roofing, siding and pipe insulation.

The survey is done by a licensed asbestos consultant, not the demolition crew.

If asbestos is found, it may need to be removed by a licensed abatement contractor before demolition.

Your permit office confirms exactly what it needs for your address.

Plan for the survey early. It's one of the most common reasons demolition gets delayed.
