Before pickup day
The Junk Removal Prep Checklist
You don't have to lift a thing — we carry everything out ourselves. But five minutes of prep can shrink your load, shorten the job, and knock real money off a flat rate. Here's exactly what to do, in order.
The night before
- Walk the pile once and pull anything you actually want to keep — this is the #1 regret we hear.
- Empty drawers, dressers, and filing cabinets. Cash, jewelry, and documents turn up constantly.
- Check pockets and cushions on couches and recliners before we load them.
- Photograph anything valuable you're donating so you have a record for the receipt.
- Unplug and defrost refrigerators and freezers at least 8 hours ahead so they don't leak in transit.
Make the path clear
- Unlock gates, sheds, garages, and storage cages, or leave the codes in a text.
- Move cars out of the driveway so the trailer can back in close to the load.
- Clear a walking path from the pile to the driveway — narrow hallways cost time, and time is the only thing that changes a flat rate.
- Crate or contain pets. Doors stay open during a load.
- In a condo or HOA: reserve the service elevator and check the community's work-hour window.
Group the pile so it loads fast
- Put everything going in one place if you can — a garage, carport, or driveway edge.
- Keep donation-quality furniture separate so we can route it to a charity instead of the transfer station.
- Stack heavy material (tile, concrete, dirt, shingles) in its own pile — it's weighed separately.
- Bag loose small debris. Loose junk takes twice as long to load as bagged junk.
- Flag anything that needs disassembly (bed frames, treadmills, sectionals) so we bring the right tools.
Pull these out — we can't take them
- Wet paint, solvents, motor oil, pool chemicals, and pesticides (hazardous waste drop-off only)
- Propane tanks, gasoline cans, and ammunition
- Asbestos-containing material and unsealed insulation
- Medical or biohazard waste and sharps
- Loose car batteries (we can take them, but tell us in advance)
After we leave
- Walk the space with us before we pull out — anything we missed goes in the same load, free.
- Ask for your donation receipt if usable items went to a charity.
- Save the invoice: cleanouts on rentals, estates, and business property are frequently deductible.
- Text us a Google review if the crew earned it — it's how a family-owned shop stays visible.
