Car Broke Down in South Florida? What to Do and What a Tow Costs
Updated October 2026 · By the All Out Rubbish crew
A breakdown on I-95 or the Turnpike is stressful. This guide covers what to do first, what each roadside service usually costs, and how to avoid being overcharged at the scene.
First, get safe
Pull as far right as you can, turn on hazards, and stay in the car with your seatbelt on if you are on a highway shoulder. If anyone is hurt or the car is blocking traffic, call 911 before calling a tow.
Local tow prices
Local tows usually start around $75–$125 plus about $5–$8 per mile. Long-distance tows are billed by the mile. Get the price before the truck hooks up.
Roadside help that avoids a tow
A jump start runs about $75–$120, a lockout about $65–$120, a spare tire change about $75–$110, and a fuel delivery about $75–$100 plus fuel. Winch-outs and recoveries run about $150–$400 depending on difficulty.
After an accident
Take photos, exchange insurance information, and decide where the car should go — your home, your shop, or the insurer's preferred shop — so it is not towed twice.

FAQs
Will insurance pay me back?
Many policies include towing or roadside coverage. Keep the itemized receipt and submit it to your insurer.
Flatbed or wheel-lift?
All-wheel-drive cars, lowered cars, and motorcycles should ride on a flatbed. Tell the dispatcher what you drive.
