How Long Do Appliances Last? Lifespan by Type (2026)

Updated August 2026 · By the All Out Rubbish crew

Every appliance eventually becomes something somebody has to haul away. Knowing roughly when that day arrives tells you whether to spend $400 on a repair or start shopping — and in coastal South Florida, the answer comes sooner than the national averages suggest.

Typical lifespans

Industry service data generally puts refrigerators around 10–13 years, freezers 11–16, gas ranges 13–15, electric ranges 11–13, dishwashers 9–10, clothes washers 10–12, dryers 10–13, microwaves 7–9, garbage disposals 10–12, tank water heaters 8–12, and central AC systems 12–15. Treat these as midpoints, not guarantees.

Why South Florida is harder on appliances

Three local factors pull those numbers down. Salt air within a few miles of the coast corrodes condenser coils and outdoor AC components. Year-round humidity means refrigerators, dehumidifiers, and AC systems run more hours per year than they would up north. And hard water shortens water-heater and dishwasher life through scale buildup. A coastal condo's AC condenser and water heater frequently land at the short end of the range.

The repair-or-replace rule

The common service heuristic: if the repair costs more than half the price of a new unit, and the appliance is past half its expected lifespan, replace it. Add one Florida-specific factor — a failing refrigerator or AC in August is an emergency, and emergency replacement always costs more than a planned one.

What happens to the old unit

Anything containing refrigerant — refrigerators, freezers, window and central AC units, dehumidifiers — cannot legally be disposed of until the refrigerant is recovered by an EPA Section 608 certified technician. Everything else is mostly steel, copper, and aluminum, and belongs in scrap recycling rather than a landfill. Delivery haul-away from a retailer covers the one-for-one swap; a second old unit sitting in the garage usually isn't included.

Extending the years you get

Rinse coastal AC condenser coils with fresh water a few times a year, vacuum refrigerator coils twice a year, flush the water heater annually to clear scale, and clean the dryer vent line — not just the lint screen — every year. None of it is glamorous, and all of it buys time.

FAQs

How long does a refrigerator last in Florida?

Usually 10–13 years, trending to the lower end near the coast where salt air corrodes condenser coils and high humidity keeps the compressor running more hours per year.

Can I put an old refrigerator at the curb?

Not in most South Florida cities. Refrigerant must be recovered by an EPA Section 608 certified technician first, and municipal crews will typically refuse the unit or issue a citation.

Is it worth repairing an appliance past 10 years old?

Generally not if the repair exceeds half the cost of a replacement. Past the midpoint of its expected lifespan, a second failure usually follows within a year or two.
