Pool Fill-In vs Full Removal
Should an in-ground pool be partly removed and filled, or fully dug out?
Partial removal breaks up the top of the pool shell and fills the hole. Full removal takes out the whole shell before backfilling. The choice affects what you can build there later and what you may need to disclose when selling.
Partial removal (fill-in)
Best for:
- Turning the area into lawn or garden
- Faster project
- No plans to build there
Full removal
Best for:
- Building on the spot later
- Avoiding questions at resale
- Lender or buyer requires it
| Partial removal (fill-in) | Full removal | |
|---|---|---|
| Shell | Upper part broken, rest stays buried | Entire shell removed |
| Building on top later | Often limited | Usually fewer limits |
| Permit | Usually required | Usually required |
| Disclosure at sale | Buyers may ask | Fewer questions |
Our take
If you may ever build where the pool is, full removal is usually the safer choice. Check permit and fill requirements with your building department either way.
Questions
Do you remove the deck and enclosure too?
Yes. Decking, coping and screen enclosures can be part of the project scope.
See the service page, what we demolish or all comparisons. We handle the permit and are licensed, insured and bonded.
